The 2015 'The Matriarch' Pinot Noir Story

Charles' devoted focus to the Pinot Noir varietal led to his development of the second single-site pinot - to which he named after another leading lady in the Smedley family, his mother. The head of the Smedley family, the link between family and vine, the leading spirit and adoring mother overseeing and caring for all.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot is from our glorious Dixon's Creek vineyard. Aromas of sweet berries, cinnamon spices and subtle vanilla bean, mixing with hints of earth, cedar and cigar coming through the oak. Ethereal perfumes and a violet-based blue lift. Silky fine tannins and a bright clean acidity gives the wine line and persistence into the back palate.

Hand-harvested and de-stemmed, the Pinot fruit was cold soaked for four days prior to inoculation with Burgundian yeast. Transferred to French oak (50% new) for 12 months maturation before bottling. 13.7% alc/vol. This wine was rated 96 points by James Halliday.
